  • Workshop D: Analysing forecasting techniques of mobile data traffic to achieve efficient mobile network optimisation

Pre-conference workshops: Sunday 28th June 2009

9.00 - 12:00 Workshop A: An innovative approach to network optimisation: Geo-Localisation and Automated Audit Reporting

This workshop will provide you with a fresh perspective on Mobile Network Optimisation with an exploration of the most advanced and innovative optimisation tools and techniques, illustrating a path to move 3G network optimisation to the next level with the adoption of intelligent applications such as Geo-Localisation and Automated or System-Assisted Audit Reporting. At the end of the workshop you will have gained a deep understanding of the most evolved techniques and trends in network optimisation and will be able to master the challenges posed by the evolution of modern wireless technologies with particular attention to the impact of Mobile Network Optimisation strategies on the business case.

Why this subject is important right now?

The exponential data traffic increase in current and future networks dictated by 3G+ service requirements, the complexity of access networks and high customer expectations in terms of quality of service are all driving a significant need for a new and innovative end-to-end mobile Network Optimisation approach. The ability to increase network performances and reduce operating costs at the same time will be key to an operators’ success.

After attending this workshop you will gain awareness of how to use innovative solutions that allow you to:

  • Identify areas of quality degradation faster and more efficiently
  • Increase operational efficiency by identifying and reducing unnecessary operating costs
  • Reduce time spent on complex analysis of network data and focus attention directly onto network performance data which provides a timely identification of potential sources of revenue loss
  • Find the right balance between quality and coverage as traffic loads increase
  • Minimise capital and operational expenditures
  • Turn network data into actionable information faster to increase QoE more efficiently
  • Use data aggregation, dashboards and KPI trend analysis effectively

Your workshop leader:

Eric Letellier
Director of Marketing
Tektronix

13.00 - 16:00 Workshop B: Effectively capturing and improving the customer experience of network

This interactive workshop will provide you with the ability to understand your customers and thus, how best to improve your QoS and their QoE. Join this workshop to obtain the very latest best practices and guidelines to develop customer centric KPIs and KQIs.

After attending this workshop you will gain awareness of how to use innovative strategies that allow you to:

  • Exploit customer experience gaps in order to improve customer experience
  • Implement your KPIs to reflect the customer’s needs for QoE
  • Understand customers expectations and perception for service quality
  • Leverage performance monitoring to optimise fault management

Your workshop leader:

Ekhlas Uddin Ahmed is Head of Network and Performance in Grameenphone Bangladesh. Ekhlas worked in the area of performance improvement analysis and recommendation in the areas of Radio, Core, VAS & IN. He started the effort incorporating end-to-end network performance management in 2005 and finally succeeded in early 2007 after extensive effort on selling the concept and aligning organisation. Ekhlas also pioneered the usage of information tools like – CDR, Passive probes, SQS etc. for better capturing customer experience.

Post-conference workshops: Wednesday 1st July 2009

9.00 - 12:00 Workshop C: Exploring the opportunities in LTEs for implementing Next Generation Services

LTE (Long Term Evolution) is becoming an important part of delivering cost-effective voice and data service. By joining this workshop you will explore in depth the challenges of LTE and the benefit of deploying of LTEs.

After attending this workshop you will gain awareness of how to use innovative solutions that allow you to:

  • Identify and understand the main alternatives telecom operators are currently facing
  • Exploit the critical factors for attracting customers and engage them into a new technology/ service
  • Understand what the key risks are when introducing and rolling out technology and how to assess them
  • Under what circumstances will new technology introduction be inappropriate from a timing and business point of view?

Your workshop leader:

Andras Kolonits is Head of Radio and Transmission, Access Network Planning in Magyar Telekom Plc (T-Mobile Hungary). András has been working in the mobile telecom business since 1993 and is responsible for all the radio network planning activities in Hungary’s market leader – T-Mobile. T-Mobile Hungary’s in-house innovations and excellent network quality, efficiency have been recognized by the National Innovation Prize and several international benchmarks. Recent areas of activity under András include broadband traffic management, network development and optimisation in European countries. He works as a consultant in projects for mobile operators under Deutsche Telekom interest. Besides his engineering background, he graduated in Master of Science in Management in the USA, at Purdue University, Lafayette, IN. He holds an MBA degree from TIAS University, Tilburg, Netherlands. He is currently preparing for his PhD degree.

13.00 – 16.00 Workshop D: Analysing forecasting techniques of mobile data traffic to achieve efficient mobile network optimisation

Flat fee tariffs are emerging in the mobile world, in all markets and across all subscriber segments. It usually starts with mobile voice followed by mobile data and bundled multimedia services. The trend of flat fee offerings is often started by smaller players who have sufficient network capacity.

As tariffs go flat, usage increases in more locations and volumes. This poses 2 distinct issues: Mobile indoor Coverage & Mobile Network Capacity. Additionally, flat fee offers could cause severe quality problems for all customers consuming mobile voice or mobile data. A frequent update of your mobile data traffic Forecast is a must during times of high mobile data consumption.

After attending this workshop you will gain awareness of how to use innovative strategies that allow you to:

  • Understand how to forecast traffic rates during high mobile data consumption
  • Plan RAN and backhaul capacity in advance to avoid under-performance of mobile networks
  • Plan spectrum re-farming (e.g. deploying UMTS in the 900MHz band)

Your workshop leader:

Stefan Spörri joined Sunrise Telecommunications Switzerland in 2000 and recently holds the position of a Senior Mobile Strategist. His major role is the formulation of the company-wide Mobile Access Strategy and its conversion into network rollout priorities, in close collaboration with Network, Marketing, Sales and Finance departments. The main achievement is the successful outcome of the implemented Mobile access Strategy in terms of massive GSM Network Coverage quality improvements over the past years, the successful launch of EDGE and UMTS network services, the ongoing HSDPA7.2/HSUPA expansions and the related positive trends in terms of customer Coverage perception, Mobile Customer base evolution and Mobile Broadband service uptake. Stefan specialises in the exploitation of network technologies and their impact on new, flat-rate based mobile broadband services.
